Supporting Transitions

Transitions

At Whitings Hill, we understand that moving from one stage of education to the next can be an exciting but sometimes challenging time for children and families. We are committed to supporting smooth transitions, helping every child feel confident and ready for the next step in their learning journey.

Transition from EYFS to Year 1

Starting Year 1 is an important milestone. To support children as they move from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1, we provide:

  • Familiarisation visits: Children spend time in their new classrooms and meet their Year 1 teacher.

  • Parent information sessions: We share information about routines, expectations, and ways to support learning at home.

  • Phased induction: Children gradually settle into full-time Year 1 routines, ensuring a gentle transition. The setting is very similar to EYFS for the first half term.

Transition from Year 6 to Secondary School

Moving on to secondary school is an exciting next step. To prepare children for this change, we offer:

  • Visits to secondary schools: Pupils have the chance to explore their new school and meet staff. Children with needs will often be accompanied by a school staff member as a familiar adult.

  • Transition activities: Workshops, team-building sessions, and information sessions help children develop confidence and independence. Our PSHE units are focused on transition.

  • Information sharing: We provide secondary schools with reports to ensure a smooth handover of learning and pastoral support.

  • Support for families: Our pastoral team offer support to parents and carers if they are concerned about how to help their child through the transition.

We believe that careful planning, clear communication, and nurturing support help every child feel ready and confident as they move to the next stage of their education.
