15th February 2019
Chinese New Year was on Tuesday 5th February 2019. This week we talked about how people celebrate this festival. We read the story of Chinese New Year which is called ‘The Great Race’ and retold the story through story mapping and role playing. We also painted animals from the story, made dragons and looked at Chinese writing and numbers. In mathematics the children learnt about ordinal numbers and used these to place the animals in the order that they won the race. The children also practiced writing numerals 1-20 and some children challenged themselves by writing the numbers that were missing in a 100 square activity.

This week has been full of exercise, healthy eating and drinking. We focussed on ‘Healthy lifestyle’. We have had many discussions about exercise and how to keep healthy. Throughout the week we have been sharing the food and exercise journals the children have been filling out at home. We used various materials to make healthy meals on paper plates and in lunch boxes and we wrote healthy living books.

This week we went bird watching. We went to the wooded area and field and used our binoculars to spot some birds- we saw seagulls, blackbirds, crows and pigeons. We have been doing lots of bird watching role play where we made booklets, wrote lists of the items we needed and completed tick sheets and check lists of the birds. We also enjoyed using the binoculars which have recording buttons on them. We enjoyed recording our voices and playing them back to listen to them.
