September 2018

Welcome to 5M and our very first monthly update.  The children have all successfully settled into their new class and routines. It is wonderful to see happy and confident children embracing all the opportunities that school has to offer them. We have made a very positive start to our learning in Year Five with the children embedding previous learning while meeting the challenges of learning new skills and knowledge enthusiastically.

Two of the things we have discussed as a class (both of which continue to cause a great deal of excitement) are the fact that all the children who use joined up letters in their handwriting in a neat and tidy style are able to apply for a ‘Pen License’, This means they will be able to use a pen rather than pencil in their exercise books. Pen licenses continue to be very sought after and a high standard of written presentation must be maintained as they can be revoked if handwriting reverts to being messy!  The other thing that the children are very keen to improve is their times tables. Everyone is keen to make progress through our school times tables achievement awards (certificates: Bronze, silver, gold and platinum followed by a gold medal then entrance to the '100 Club' with the ultimate accolade of being Champion of the 100 Club).

Our first topic of the new academic year is called 'The United Kingdom'. It is a geography based topic that is always well received by the children. Some of the things we will be learning about are the countries, cities and towns of Great Britain, modern Europe and European mountains, rivers and landmarks. Our science focus is on properties of materials. You will receive a paper copy of our topic web, please keep it handy so you talk to your child about what they have been learning about in class.

Thank you in advance to all parents and carers who attended our 'Meet the Teacher' session in the 5M classroom. It is heartening to see how interested you are in your child's education.
