Today we had a special assembly where we got to meet lots of different owls. Olivia and Erika told us that there are 200 different types of owls. They like to live in hot or cold places and they eat meat.
Today we met 6 owls. First up was, Whisper, a 17 year old barn owl. They like open fields and barns.
There are 5 types of owls that live in the UK- the barn owl, tawny owl, long eared owl, short eared owl and little owl. They like to hunt from early evening to early morning.
Owls like to fly very low to the ground. They fly slowly and silently because of their soft feathers. They have the best hearing- they can even hear the heart beat of a mouse. Owls can turn their heads right round. They use their talons to catch food and they swallow their food whole- what they can’t digest is rolled up and comes out like a pellet.
We also met Dotty. Another barn owl who is 1 years old. She is the same size as Whisper.
We also met a Little owl called Chip who is 5 years old.
Next was an African spotted eagle owl called Murphy. They like to like in hot places in Africa. Murphy is 1 years old and will never get any bigger.
White faced scops owl was the next species of owl we met. This one was called Tango. They live across world. The colours in her feather hides her away in mountains and rocks. Tango is 11 years old.
Lastly we met Oscar, the tawny eagle owl. This is a very naughty owl and he is 17 years old. They come from Egypt. They like hot and sandy places. Their yellowish colouring helps them to hide in desserts.
After we met the owls, we watched them all fly! It was so amazing!! We were so excited to get our photos taken with Whisper the barn owl.
