This week the children explored the book, ‘Ruby’s Worries’ by Tom Percival. Through the book we explored the character Ruby’s emotions and the reasons and events that take place to affect these. The children did some lovely writing about Ruby and what might be worrying her. They also painted amazing self-portraits, looking carefully at their skin tone and mixing the primary colours with white till they made a matching skin tone. The children thoroughly enjoyed mixing the colours and there was lots of lovely discussions about how to make the different skin tones.
My Special Object
Next week we will continue this theme so your child can bring in a special object from home that they would like to talk about to their friends. Please make sure the object is in a box with their name written on.

This week we continued the theme of superheroes and enjoyed sharing the book ‘Supertato – Run, Veggies Run’. The story encouraged the children to think about having a Healthy Lifestyle and what this means. We discussed the importance of a balanced diet and introduced the children to sporty challenge cards. The children had lots of fun taking part in obstacle course races in the garden. They enjoyed role playing in our new ‘Superhero Smoothie Café’ where they took orders for their own healthy smoothies. On Thursday they got to make their own smoothie and wrote a list of the healthy ingredients that they wanted to put in.
In maths the children have continued to name and describe 3D shapes by making shapes and by using shape in construction and pattern activities.

This week, we’ve been enjoying talking about superheroes! We loved turning ourselves into mini superheroes, dressing up and role playing and making our own superhero masks and watches. We also looked at the story ‘Supertato’- a superhero potato who tries to save his vegetable and fruit friends from the evil pea! We read the story, designed our own vegetable superhero, and we explored how the characters were feeling in the story through role play and used speech bubbles.
In maths the children have been learning to name and describe 3D shapes and use these to make models and construct. They have explored measuring length or height using cubes and comparing to find the difference.
This week we celebrated World Book Day! Each day the children explored a different book. These included ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’ The children had fun dressing up as these characters and role playing the stories. They applied literacy skills to create story maps, lists, stories, character descriptions, as well as painting and collaging the characters.
In maths we have explored the concept of estimating and checking by counting. The children enjoyed finding out how accurate their estimate was by finding the difference.
This week Reception had lots of fun learning about space. The children went on to learn about how to travel into space, what they would need for a space adventure and what is in space. The children wowed us with the amazing alien and rocket models which they created using a range of creative skills, tools and techniques. At the end of the week the children became astronauts and used their imagination to travel to space where they learnt the number skill, doubling. They applied the skill of doubling to make alien salt dough.
As part of World Book Day next week we are celebrating books! Each day we will be looking at different books and taking part in fun literacy activities based on these stories.
