Happy new year to 4M and all our families and friends. I hope you had a healthy, safe and happy Christmas holiday. This term is going to be full of exciting learning opportunities that are definitely going to keep us busy over the coming months.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who helped prepare the children for our Christmas concert last month, you may have helped your child learn their lines or listened to them practise their singing. However you helped, Mrs Day, Mrs Ives and I are very grateful because everything leads to a highly successful performance which is not only a pleasure to watch but boosts the children's self confidence and self esteem massively. Following our success it is not overstating it to say the children were on top of the world and rightly very pleased with themselves.
Our English work this month will be based on two genres - poetry and then fiction. Our poetry work will be focusing on different types of words and phrases, particularly similes and metaphors, imagine that the children will be trying to create a picture with words rather than paint. I'm looking forward to seeing how inventive they are going to be. The second half of this month will see us focusing on a fiction book called 'Jemmy Button' it's the story of a young lad taken from his home in the tropics and raised in England. This book has excellent links to our new topic 'Saving the World - Rainforests.'
Our maths work this month will see us developing our prior learning by applying what we know to solve problems and investigate mathematical hypothesis. An example of this to get you thinking is 'When you add two odd numbers you always get an even numbered answer.' This type of work allows the children to test themselves and challenge what they know. Of course we will also be introducing new learning with particular emphasis on decimals, fractions, division and time (24 hour clock).
Our new topic is set to last the whole of the Spring term and promises to be very interesting with lots of different types of learning, presentation of knowledge and out of school learning (a visit to the rainforest bio dome at London Zoo) to maintain the children's interest and enthusiasm. Make sure you keep your paper copy of our topic web handy so you can discuss with your child what we have been doing in class. If you misplace it please download another copy from the link on our class page.
So buckle up and get ready, 2018 is taking off and 4M are definitely going to enjoy the ride.
