Chinese New Year was on Friday 16th February 2018. This week we talked about how people celebrate this festival. We read the story of Chinese New Year which is called ‘The Great Race’ and retold the story through story mapping and role playing. We also painted animals from the story, made dragons and looked at Chinese writing and numbers.
As part of World Book Day next week we are celebrating books! Each day we will be looking at different books and taking part in fun literacy activities based on these stories.
We will be exploring, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’ The children will have the opportunity to take part in a range of role playing opportunities, story mapping, and character descriptions, as well as painting and collaging the characters.
World Book Day will be on the Tuesday 27th February. On this day please bring in your favourite book and dress up as your favourite book character. We will also be having a Mad Hatters tea party at 2pm and would like to invite parents/carers in to join us. Children are welcome to bring in their favourite cuddly toy to join in too. We will provide ‘juice ‘in teapots and iced buns for everyone. You are also welcome to bring some of your own food for the class to share. If you bring in food please be mindful that due to allergies we have a strict policy of no nuts.

Puppet Week has been so much fun! We have been interacting with a range of puppets. We made stick puppets, we retold stories using hand puppets and finger puppets from story sacks and we made spoon puppets with some of our grownups. Thank you for coming and helping the children to make their puppets. We invited our friends to come and watch our puppet show through writing invitations and performed a puppet show!
As Safer Internet Day was on Tuesday 6th February we have had lots of discussions about how to stay safe online. We read the story ‘The adventure of Smartie the Penguin’ and played games of child friendly websites. We also drew pictures of what we like to do online.

This week we have been doing lots of activities about Pets. Some of us shared photos of our pets during a circle time. We painted pictures of our pets or a pet we would like and we also made paper plate pets. We also introduced the book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. We retold the story in lots of ways – we told the story through actions, acted out the story in the outdoor area and we also used small world props in our play. The children had lots of fun re-enacting the story in the garden area and recorded the story as they went along. We have also made our own books and drew our favourite parts of the story on large rolls of paper.
Next week will be puppet week. Reception will be making spoon puppets. On Wednesday 7th February from 1:15pm-3:00pm, parents are more than welcome to come into our reception class and make spoon puppets with their child- just go to the office and you will be let through to the classroom. Throughout the week we will make different kinds of puppets and we will use story sacks to retell favourite stories using puppets.
