16th December 2016

This week we have been looking at the story of Blue Penguin. The character from the story wrote us a letter and asked for our help. Blue Penguin set us the challenge to find out some facts about penguins to make sure that he is one. We looked at non- fiction texts about Penguins and researched information on the internet using the mini laptops. We also made glitter snowflake pictures and winter/Christmas pictures using different shapes. Some of us enjoyed a game of ‘Penguin Pile Up’ - a game where we had to carefully place the penguins on the shaking iceberg.

Next week will be our last week before the Christmas holidays. We will be making white chocolate Rice Krispie cakes.

Tuesday 20th Dec– Christmas party day

Wednesday 21st Dec – last day of term – school finishes at 1:30pm

Children will return to school after the holidays on Wednesday 4th January.

After half term, we will be exploring ‘Winter’. We will look at stories and non-fiction texts related to winter including, the weather, animals and habitats. We will also be painting pictures along to winter themed music, such as, The four seasons by Vivaldi – winter, Howard Blake - We’re walking in the air and Emilie Waldteufel - The skaters waltz.

This week we have been enjoying the book ‘Blue Penguin’ by Petr Horacek. We talked about Antarctica and learnt about different types of Arctic animals.  Children made Penguins and other Arctic animals from cardboard rolls. We introduced the story and talked about the illustrations from the text. The children took part in activities exploring ice and water, drawing Arctic scenes in the style of illustrations from Petr Horacek’s texts and looking at maps/ globes to see Antarctica’s location in relation to where we live in the world.

Next week we will continue to enjoy the story of Blue penguin. We will look into the characters in the story and explore their feelings. We will also be investigating non- fiction texts about Penguins and looking up information on the internet. We will also be making winter pictures and investigating shapes.

The children have been busy this week creating paintings of their friends, making settings from the story and writing about what they enjoy doing with their friends. We have talked about the Characters and their feelings and what it is like to feel lonely.
